Employing the 'explore and discover' approach, including the principles of 'holism' and 'emergence', it is demonstrated that in Chinese gift offering and acceptance sequences, the Chinese notion LI is significantly different from the western concept of 'politeness', both in content and structure. Implications for intercultural communication are discussed.
