In highly frequent grammatical environments, the phonetic reduction of DON'T belongs to the process of grammaticalization of collocations exhibiting a range of semantic and pragmatic conversational functions. A case is made for usage-based approaches to linguistic structure which can thus account for hitherto problematic form-function regularities.
