Annotation

Traditionally, the Mapudungun verbal suffix -Fï is described as a past tense marker. This paper argues however that -Fï is a metapragmatic operator that counteracts conventional implicature in speech. It is noted that grammatical categories signalling the speaker's alerting to the implicature are common in American Indian languages, but unknown to Indoeuropean languages.
