Annotation

This paper documents the introductions stand-up performers receive prior to their act at comedy venues. It is argued that these routinized, introduction sequences are essential to performance framing and that they can be characterized by a series of six turns (contextualization, response framing, evalution of the comedian, request for action, introduction, audience applause), the structure of which is recognizable to both performers and audiences.
