Annotation

This article examines the discursive constraints conditioning language users to select between causal prepositions and causal connectives, presented here as alternatives of the underlying causal situation. A quantitative corpus analysis revealed the pragmatic nature of these constraints - they have to do with the discourse domain and information management - as was confirmed by an analysis of the grammatical and lexical constraints on causal connectives and prepositions.
