On how place deixis affects speaker attitude towards the referent. It is shown how in naturally occurring interaction the interactants' use of place deixis pertains more to topic resolution and linguistic politeness than to spatial orientation. The choice between proximal and distal deixis is then related to the relationship between a speaker's attitude toward the object of reference and its sequential placement in context.
