Annotation

On acts of disagreement in academic discourse, with a focus on the choice of linguistic markers. In terms of the relative power of interlocutors, it was found that markers of positive politeness were more frequent in professor-student disagreements than in peer interactions or in student-professor disagreements. Severity of disagreement (imposition) was related to politeness and face threat. Face maintenance was not a relevant factor in accounting for disagreement in pedagogical contexts.
