Annotation

To shed more light on the way in which a sign without specific reference indexes the speaker's emotional expressivity, this study investigates expressive functions of the Japanese wh-phrase NAN(I). It is argued that non-interrogative NAN(I) is a Discourse Modality indicator functioning as an 'anti-sign'. As such, it refers to unspeakable moment of language, while also serving expressive functions.
