Annotation

Within the framework of rational actor models (such as the markedness model) and Lessig's examination of the regulation and construction of social meaning, this article postulates that codeswitching is regulated by a rationale balancing marked and unmarked choices of codeswitching as well as social norms and linguistic constraints. Unmarked choices derive from existing norms, while marked choices attempt to construct new norms of social meaning.
