Annotation
This study applies the framework of the markedness model and face-action theory to instances of codeswitching in drama texts featuring dialogues between individuals with low- and high-status. It is shown that low-status individuals, while interacting with members of a dominant social group employ codeswitching as face-threatening strategies that express their interactional power. In symmetrical relationships however, a marked choice is used to alleviate a potentially face-threatening situation. Moreover, the data also inform about speakers' intentions in relation to the code used in interaction.
