Annotation

The realization of four conversational functions is compared in monolingual and bilingual conversations by speakers of Punjabi and English in London. It is observed that codeswitching either replaces monolingual means of marking significant moves in conversation, or it may strengthen the effect of such moves. These findings lead the authors to conclude that codeswitching is a supplementary linguistic device enhancing the monolingual means of expression of bilinguals.
