Annotation
It is commonly held that the assertion/presupposition distinction correlates with the distinction between new and given information. However, presupposing constructions conveying new information (e.g. 'informative presupposition' it-clefts, nonrestrictive relatives) cast doubts on this assumption. It is argued that, depending on contextual variables new information is presupposed if assertion is unnecessary. Support for this claim is found in written language.
