A characterization of the Japanese complementizers TO, KOTO and NO using the theoretical notions of De re and De dicto, potential versus actual and concept versus percept. The interactions of the characterizations and contextual factors such as the speaker's distance from the information allows accounting for hitherto unsolved examples.
