In order to account for the distinction between irony and nonirony, the paper presents an implicit display theory of verbal irony. This theory features, among other criteria, typicality conditions and degrees of ironicalness, which allow judgments of (non)irony. It is argued that the implicit display theory is an adequate and comprehensive theory of verbal irony.
