Illustrating a new direction in Japanese expression of modality research, this article focuses on the use of interactional particles in tandem with style-shifts between verb forms. It is observed that instances of style-shift accounted for by the notions of 'awareness of thou' or 'attitudinal distance' lack interactional particles, and those accounted for by negative politeness, lack particles providing hearer reaction options.
