This study hypothesizes that the meaning and use of the Spanish discourse marker A VER (Catalan, A VEURE), as used teacher-student interaction, has an additional function that is usually not found in the research literature. It is found that the discourse marker negatively evaluates both the contents of the student responses as well as their participation to the interaction.
