Rejecting the hypothesis that source-of-information (evidentiality) correlates with speaker-evaluation of reliability-of-information (modality), the author distinguishes source-of-information from speaker-attitude marking. It is shown that in Bulgarian, epistemic marking is a property of source-of-information rather than of speaker attitude.
