Annotation

An examination of the interactional uses of inscriptions (non-canonical, rule-guided acts with local meaning, e.g. diagrams) based on the analysis of a German business negotiation. It is found that the combination of talk and inscriptions results in hybrid symbols: not only do they signify in a specific domain, they also contribute to the conversational 'mise-en-scène' or function as metaphoric 'graphic gestures'.
