Annotation

Observing a correlation between the choice of tense in the reformulations of a radio talk show host and the social actions he engages in (e.g. disagreement, topic shift), it is argued that tense is used in this context as a social tool rather than a marker of temporal events. In conclusion, the paper urges that a study of linguistic form should also analyze pragmatic function in interaction.
