Annotation
An oral comprehension test designed for the interpretation of anaphoric NPs in Spanish revealed that Levinson's predictions of coreference and non-coreference were falsified by listeners' interpretations of coreference. These interpretations follow from inferences which, in turn, arise from the effect of consistency constraints on coreference. A case is made for the inclusion of consistency constraints in the neo-Gricean theory of anaphora.
