On the distribution of pitch maxima in oral narratives by native and non-native speakers of English. It is hypothesized that intonational high points correlate with emotionally prioritized text. The research findings are in line with previous research on pitch range and the topic structure of discourse and suggest that emotion linked to intonation can be seen as a resource in cross-cultural communication.
