Annotation

It is observed that, in spontaneous interaction, adolescent speakers use the pragmatic marker YOU KNOW as a metalinguistic and social monitor, whereas adult speakers use the marker as a textual monitor. These findings suggest that YOU KNOW is in the process of 'pragmaticalization', with the process of grammaticalization on the horizon.
