Annotation

This article asks: if one group of languages has fewer modal particles than another group, does the first group then have other ways of expressing that particular function? It is argued that, besides the minimality of linguistic expression of a pragmatic function, the research data have certain properties in their diachrony in common: metonymic semantic change and a contiguity between a sound chain and speech situation.
