Annotation

A reanalysis of the Chinese discourse marker DUI BU DUI ('correct-not-correct'). It is shown that in TCUs, DUI BU DUI strengthens the illocutionary force of the sentence proposition, it signals transitions of interactional sequences and it helps the speaker maintain the addressee's attention. These findings lead the authors to conclude that grammatical meanings sometimes follow from interactional contexts and that language functions are sometimes activity-specific.
