Annotation

This study reports on two presuppositions in 'N-be-that-constructions' (e.g. "The point is that..."): first, the expectation that more specific information is imminent and second, the impression that the initial NP expresses given information. Having observed that the second type of presupposition enables speakers to render information as given, when in reality it is new, it is argued that this type can be used for bluffing in combination with evidential downtoning or upgrading and with backgrounding of the speaker role.
