This article presents a social theory of the Kyôto dialect: analysis of the region and its dialect, how these are individuated, both culturally, structurally and ideologically. It is shown how pragmatics, language structure, and language ideologies are interrelated, and how macro-social phenomena relate to micro-social speech events.
