This article introduces a metaperspective of discourse study on the basis of three analytical units: utterance, social interaction, and social context. This metaperspective is discussed in terms of Grice's Cooperative Principle (CP). A case is made for an articulation of the CP capable of consistently describing discourse as utterance, social interaction, and social context.
