Annotation

This article proposes a reanalysis of Labov's sociolinguistic model of the speech community based on research in non-metropolitan Mexico. Four speech community configurations correspond to four linguistic variable types: no knowledge of stigmatized variables; an awareness of stigmatized variables; an awareness of stigmatized and regional variables; the preference of standard variants over regional ones.
