The concept of community of practice is applied to the analysis of female language use in a sexual assault tribunal. It is illustrated how both male and female tribunal members ask questions which portray the sexual assault as consensual sex. The author claims that the community of practice approach may yield new insights into the language use of the women in the tribunal.
