Annotation

Similar to previous research, it is found that the gender patterns of pronoun usage in this Indo-Guyanese speech community show remarkably little variation over time. It is argued that this type of variation is a function of interactional engagement. The research findings illustrate how gender can influence linguistic variation and, vice versa, how linguistic variation functions as an index of gender.
