Annotation
This article applies the concept of 'framing' to verbal irony in conversation and finds that the ironic effect follows from a shift of footing, which, in turn, detaches utterances from their expected referentiality. The type of turn construction and its sequential placement determine this shift of footing as well as the frame. In conclusion, this article illustrates the affiliative nature of verbal irony, as well as its subtle effect and attitude range.
