This article examines the variation between the Mexican Spanish aspectual expressions ESTAR (‘be located’) and ANDAR (‘go around’) + gerund. It is found that both linguistic and social factors are at play: aspectual differences reflect distributional routines, while certain verbal patterns are associated with popular varieties.
