Bock, Michael. 1983. On the 'natural' meaning of acoustic signals. In Rickheit, Gert and Michael Bock, eds. Psycholinguistic studies in language processing. Walter de Gruyter. pp. 29–55.
Annotation
An experimental inquiry, intended to answer the question whether it is an arbitrary matter what conceptual meaning is represented by an acoustic signal. The conclusion is that they have a unique affective meaning, and consequently B. doubts that there is any point in the functional division between linguistic surface form and linguistic content or semantic basis.
