Annotation

An attempt to state the necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for a truthful application of 'to promise'. Special attention is paid to the notion of obligation. The analysis is compared with Searle's. The paper concludes with some remarks on the relationship between promise and morality, and between descriptive and evaluative statements.
