Observation of service encounters in three public institutions in La Paz, Bolivia, reveals that there are differences in the way marginalized indigenous people, as opposed to members of the mainstream, urban, white-mestizo population, are addressed by institutional representatives. In this article, I show what these differences are and highlight what appear to be institutionalized, discriminatory linguistic practices through which "otherness" is marked and "respectability" is conferred or withheld.
