B. argues that starting from a dominantly SOV language, we may account for an immediate transition to V2 in the Western Germanic languages and the retention of SOV-order in German and Dutch subordinate clauses if the influence of the pragmatic mode (à la Givon 1979: 'On understanding grammar') is accepted.
