Contains an extensive review of the literature on existential 'there', an examination of the role of existential 'there' in present-day English (both spoken and written data are used!), and of its diachronic evolution (on the basis of written texts). The analysis is related to general linguistic problems, among them the relationship between syntax and discourse.
