An investigation into the dependence of word position and intonation of English utterances as to the situational context, the cotext, and the informational intentions of the speaker. Rhetorical problems related to the theory of functional sentence perspective are discussed. Correlations with non-European languages are made, and there is some concern with matters of linguistic typology.
