Examining (previous research on) the concepts of discourse, conversation and dialogue, the articles in this volume try to define the 'object' of study for the field of Dialogue Analysis. Conversation Analysis is criticized for its focus on conversation as locally managed in terms of its turn-taking system and for its lack of an organizing concept of communicative purpose.
