This volume challenges the traditional view of idiom as a noncompositional phrase that speakers make sense of by learning arbitrary links between it and its meaning. Thus claims can be found that each constituent does contribute independently to meaning, that the link from phrase to meaning is not arbitrary and that idiomatic expressions can undergo syntactic operations.
