This collection of articles proposes to offer more serious theoretical underpinnings to construct a critical sociolinguistics as opposed to Labov's classical correlational sociolinguistics, criticized here for just linking frequency values for isolated linguistic and social variables without interpreting either of them as part of a theoretical whole on the basis of social and linguistic theory.
