The chapters in this volume focus on the interaction between the cognitive mechanisms underlying speech production/comprehension and social factors, such as politeness and belief systems. It is shown how theories and methods of social and cognitive psychology provide insights in the process of interpersonal communication. Speaker intentions, indirect speech and figurative language, perspective-taking and conversational collaboration, and the relationships between language, cognition, culture, and social interaction are among the topics under investigation.
