Arguing that phrasal prominence (nuclear stress) reflects syntactic ordering, this book details how the interactions of prosodic stress, word order and focus affect the placement of nuclear stress (main sentence stress) in Romance and Germanic languages. Two types of syntactic ordering are discerned, based on a grammatical (re-)formulation of the Nuclear Stress Rule.
