This book examines judges' interpretations of written law in the courtroom, revealing how courtroom ideologies are common yet largely hidden or denied. It is argued that the diversity in judge-defendant interactions follows from judges' interpretations of written law, their personal attitudes towards courtroom control and the notion of due process.
