Though concerned with metatheoretical questions, the author, rather than attempting to define sociolinguistics as such, explores core commonalities among theoretical approaches represented in the works of Hymes, Labov and Gumperz, and the relationship of their ideas to the "mainstream" core of linguistic inquiry.
