This contribution to the growing debate on the close links of polities to language, consists of a general survey of scholarly perception of language policy and linguistic culture, followed by case studies of three national situations, those of France, India, and the US, where these problems have been faced, with focus on the important regional cases presented by Alsace, Tamil Nadu, and California.
