Access to large corpuses of English has enabled researchers to analyze the minutiae of linguistic change in greater detail than before, often pinpointing the beginnings of linguistic innovations in place and time. The author employs the results from this research to link major historical events to language change, especially in the fields of discourse analysis, stylistics and studies on pidgins and creoles.
