Annotation

A study of the language of disputes in divorce hearings in coastal Kenya, illustrating how language forms and is formed by gender hierarchies in postcolonial Swahili society. The author shows that women are not powerless under Islamic law, while also challenging the common beliefs about Islam and gender relations.
