Annotation

A relevance-theoretic semantic and pragmatic account of English modal auxiliary verbs. Following a discussion of earlier analyses, a unitary semantic approach is outlined, detailing how modal verbs receive root interpretations in context. It is argued that epistemic interpretations rely heavily on the concept of metarepresentation. Differences between natural-language interpretations of modals and their logical uses are also discussed.
