A survey of Argumentation Theory (AT): development, basic notions, theoretical implications. Also, an overview is given of problems within AT, such as a principled semantics/pragmatics distinction. It is argued that a cognitive theory with a principled semantics/pragmatics distinction like Relevance Theory, could solve most of AT's serious problems.
